Call Center Employees Win $350,000 Settlement For Pre-Shift Work

Convergys Corp. has
agreed to pay $352,376 to settle accusations that it failed to pay 1,400
workers at the company’s Tucson
call center for pre-shift time worked. The settlement arose out of a U.S.
Department of Labor (DOL) investigation that found the company didn’t pay the
employees for time they had to spend preparing for their shifts by logging onto
the computer and accessing applications needed to begin making or receiving
phone calls. This pre-shift time amounted to between 5 and 30 minutes a day for
each call center employee. Convergys denied violating wage and hour laws and
said it settled to avoid protracted litigation with the DOL.
