Fired for Not Fitting Into New Uniforms: Waitresses Asked to Wear Size 2 or 4

Sixteen cocktail waitresses are angry after being let go from their jobs at Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City. The women, (who were all middle-aged and long-time employees), were told that they were no longer a good fit for the casino’s new uniforms, according to NBC Philadelphia.

Nancy Schromsky, one of the waitresses fired, told NBC that she and her co-workers were asked to try on the new 1920s flapper-style uniforms in a clothing-strewn room. The only available sizes were extra small — either a 2 or a 4. After trying on the ill-fitting uniforms, the women were photographed, and later let go.

“I can’t think of anything I’ve dealt with that was more disgusting and dehumanizing than what they’ve done to these women,” said Robert McDevitt, president of Local 54 of UNITE-HERE.

Union officials say that the casino let the older women go in an effort to cultivate a younger clientele. However, a spokesperson for Resorts maintains that the company did nothing wrong.

“All cocktail servers were given individual consideration and the selection process was conducted in a fair and objective manner. We empathize with the cocktail servers who lost their jobs and gave them hiring preference in other open positions at Resorts.”
