Paying Lip Service to Sexual Harassment

Having a sexual harassment policy won’t do your company any good if the procedures are never implemented.

Take the case of an employee who became the victim of severe steady sexual harassment from one of her managers. When she complained about the incidents to management, they simply shrugged it off. Since he made a lot of money for the company, they basically ignored his obnoxious behavior.

Management only took her complaints seriously when she quit and filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against the company.  Even then, they only disciplined the manager, but didn’t fire him.

The court, in awarding $300,000 to the victim, found that there was little evidence to show that the company actually carried out its own anti-harassment policies.

No matter how good your policies are, you must make sure that they are being enforced at all levels of the company.
