HR Strange But True

Are Employers Pushing a Dangerous Drug in the Workplace?

Glassdoor has announced the results of its annual Employees’ Choice Awards, releasing its lists of Best Places to Work in 2014. According to the site, winners were determined by the people who know these companies best—their employees. Not surprisingly, three social media heavyweights were in the top five.

The drug is caffeine, and there are probably a few pots going in your workplace, and you may have a giant regular coffee on your desk. And the vending machines in your company probably contain energy drinks or “shots.” If not, they are available at any gas station or grocery store.

According to Upwave, Turner Broadcasting’s new lifestyle social media and website brand, caffeine is a stimulant, and while it may keep us mentally sharp, too much of it is not beneficial—and can even be dangerous.

The Upwave article says a safe “dose” of caffeine is about 200 to 300 milligrams, depending on an individual’s weight and health.  That’s about the caffeine in two to four cups of coffee.

However, if employees also drink caffeinated soft drinks and take caffeinated painkillers, the dose rises. And some energy drinks contain the whole day’s allotment in one serving, with some employees drinking three or four per shift. Caffeine capsules contain an even stronger dose. And if the employee is also on prescription medication, the danger rises.

Unfortunately, Americans’ infatuation with caffeine is increasing—the article states that the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration reports energy drink-related emergency-room visits went from 10,068 in 2007 to 20,783 visits in 2011.

So, as part of your wellness initiative, take a look at the sources of caffeine available in your workplace.
