Forget everything you think you know about AI in the workplace. While the rapid advancements of generative AI models might seem like just another tech upgrade, Matthew Duncan, Head of Future of Work Thought Leadership at Microsoft, has a message for HR leaders: it’s a fundamental cultural revolution. At Spark HR 2025, Duncan shared insights from Microsoft’s latest Work Trend Index report, highlighting that successful integration isn’t about what AI can do, but how we think about work.
According to Duncan, based on surveys of 31,000 individuals across 31 countries, the future of work is undeniably AI-driven, but human-led. This means a critical focus on upskilling workforces and fostering adaptability to truly harness AI’s potential, rather than merely implementing new tools. The challenge for many organizations, he notes, is breaking free from old mental patterns and embracing a “blank canvas” approach to how work gets done.
