Why Employees Should Attend Wellness Training (Video)

In this video, we provide an animated skit which contains a trainer/HR professional’s inquiry with an employee as to why he didn’t attend a training session on weight management, the employee’s attempt to illustrate why he didn’t find it necessary to attend, and his realization that he could have benefited from the training.

Diana: Tony, I didn’t see you at the employee wellness training session on successful weight management today.

Tony: Hi Diana. Yeah, sorry I had to take a phone call. Besides I actually didn’t need the training. I work out a lot, so I can pretty much eat whatever I want and still stay in good shape.

Diana: Oh yes, I’ve noticed. So, you’re saying you didn’t need the training?

Tony: Um, well, I’m sure you did a great job training everyone so no offense. But yeah.

Diana: I have the quiz that attendees took at the end of the training session. Would you like to take the quiz?

Tony: Sure, why not?

Diana: Great! OK. Number one, in order to safely and effectively lose weight and keep it off, must you reduce calories, increase exercise, or do both?

Tony: Oh, that’s easy. Increase exercise.

Diana: Actually, Tony the answer is do both. You need to reduce calories and increase exercise to safely and effectively lose weight and keep it off.

Diana: OK, next question. Once you’re middle-aged, it’s easy to start gaining a pound or two a year even if you don’t eat more.

Tony: That makes no sense. False!

Diana: Actually it’s true. People who notice that they are having trouble maintaining a healthy weight should take steps to increase activity and slightly reduce calorie intake to avoid that sneaky yearly weight gain.

Diana: OK, next question. Which body mass index—or BMI—represents a healthy weight? 25 to 30, over 30, or neither?

Tony: 25 to 30

Diana: Sorry, neither of these BMIs represents a healthy weight. A BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is a healthy body weight.

Diana: OK, next question. True or false? For a nutritious diet that helps control weight, most of your calories should come from protein.

Tony: True!

Diana: False. Nutritionists say that 45 to 65 percent of your calories should come from carbohydrates like vegetables, fruits, and grains, which are low fat and give you energy without adding pounds. Protein like meat, cheese, and dairy products can be high in fat. Nutritionists say that Americans generally eat too much protein. Between 10 and 35 percent of calories from protein every day is enough.

Tony: Well, I feel foolish Diana.

Diana: That’s OK Tony. You didn’t know what you didn’t know. But that just shows why it can be so beneficial to your health to attend employee wellness training sessions.

Tony: You’re right. I won’t miss the next one. Where do you get all this information anyway?

Diana: From BLR. They’re providers of human resources and employee training solutions, like their downloadable book, Workplace Wellness: Healthy Employees, Healthy Families, Healthy ROI. You can learn more about BLR’s employee wellness training resources at www.blr.com. So long, Tony!

Tony: Bye Diana. See you at the next employee wellness training session!
