HR Strange But True

Don’t ‘Bare Arms’ in My Workplace, Warns Judge

You’ve heard of the “fashion police,” but now a judge is critiquing what attorneys wear in his courtroom. And the dress code he prefers may not be considered fashion-forward.

If you watch the news or talk shows, you know that short-skirted sleeveless dresses, especially in bright colors and worn with killer heels, are what’s hot right now.

According to WSMV-TV4 in Nashville, Judge Royce Taylor found this apparel inappropriate for legal professionals and the seriousness of the proceedings in his court.

The station has been told several judges have received complaints forwarded by the bar association about the amount of skin being shown by female attorneys.

His solution is to require that female attorneys wear dresses or jackets with sleeves that cover the elbow when court is in session. But this is not gender discrimination; the judge had previously asked male attorneys to wear jackets in court. And don’t wear a golf shirt under the jacket!

Luckily for all concerned, there is a clothing store in the square near the courthouse in case a lawyer needs a quick cover-up to comply with the court’s dress code.

  1. I am proud of Judge Royce Taylor for taking this stand. It should be fair across the board of genders in a court room and I hope that professional dress comes back to the office. It is distracting and unreasonable for some of the work attire that gets past the front door, and I am a very nice looking woman with a great figure. But that aside, desecration is missing in the office, cleavage and short lengths are not professional in my opinion. In the workplace we are representing the organization or court room in this instance, professional dress not described by talk shows and fashion models is warranted.

Additionally, I know my behavior and respect factor differs upon appearance of an individual, that includes tattoos, rings, and dress.
